While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has …

It’s late fall here in New Hampshire. All the leaves are down and we are already getting snow in the mountains. Some of the ski resorts will be open by the end of this month. For me, this is a favorite time of year. I enjoy the crisp fall air. I thoroughly enjoyed the changing color of the leaves and, even now, there is a certain beauty. The beauty is in the shapes of the branches and the backdrop of the pines, hemlocks, spruce etc.
As I was looking at all the naked trees, I was reminded of how the cycle of the seasons can affect people. For some, moods …

Isn’t it strange how nature is a reflection of the things of God?
Sunday morning, my wife and I were on our way to the celebration gathering of the church. The moon was still in the sky and we began to talk about how the moon reflects the light from the sun. We talked about how much of the moon could be seen depending on the shadow cast by the earth. We also talked about the dark side of the moon. Now, neither of us are scientists but common sense tells us that the dark side is the side pointed away from the sun. It’s the same thing that we …

I started hiking again on this past Wednesday. Actually, I started again a couple of weeks ago when my son, Ben, and I went to Arizona and hiked and camped on the rim of the Grand Canyon. But, that’s another story.
Wednesday, I hiked Mount Osceola. This mountain sits on the northwest side of Waterville Vally in New Hampshire. Osceola is 4320 feet tall and offers a great view from it’s ledgy top. The trail is sometimes steep and rugged. At times, you scramble from boulder to boulder to make your way. The trail is lined with birch and hemlock trees and offers very little view….

I wonder if God ever feels taken for granted. I understand what it feels like. It feels like you have been forgotten. It’s as though people just assume you will always be there. It’s like they assume you have no needs of your own. Maybe God doesn’t have needs. Maybe he never feels lonely. But, I still wonder if he feels taken for granted.
Maybe it is because I become so accustomed to Him being there. Maybe I become too familiar with Him and assume too much. Maybe it’s just my attitude towards Him or my perception of our relationship.
I tend to think along the lines of MY Lord,
MY Savior,
MY Father,
My God—as though …

An estimated 19 million American adults are living with major depression. Many of these people are Christians. I am one of them, are you? It is very unfortunate that, in the Christian community, there is often a feeling of shame associated with depression. Sometimes, well meaning brothers and sisters will make you feel that it is simply a lack of faith which is causing the depression. The suggested cure is prayer and Bible reading. There are many causes of depression, not all of them faith issues. For some Christians, there may be faith issues which add to the depression which are not the root cause. I am not saying that prayer and Bible reading are not important. They are …
